The Process for Managing Food Allergies and Dietary Accommodations 

Stonehill Dining Services provides dietary accommodations for medical or religious reasons.  

The campus dietitian, Kim Pierce, can assist you with this process kpierce@stonehill.edu or 508-565-1879.   In order to be eligible for dietary accommodations and meet with the dietitian, Kim Pierce, to receive individualized assistance with your dietary needs you must first register with the Office of Accessibility Resources at (http://www.stonehill.edu/offices-services/accessibility-resources/).

The Health Form that you filled out for Health Services as an incoming student asks about all categories of allergies.  This is a confidential form and this allergy information is not shared with anyone outside of health services.  It is very important to update Health Services, the Office of Accessibility Resources and the dietitian should you develop new food allergies throughout your years at Stonehill.

Procedure for Allergies and Nutritional Accommodations for Medical and Religious Reasons

1) CONTACT DINING SERVICES : Student should contact the Stonehill Dining Services registered dietitian Kim Pierce at kpierce@stonehill.edu or 508-565-1879 to discuss their dietary needs.  At this meeting:

  • Student will decide what method of food preparation best meets their needs. (meals prepared on the regular food line, meals that require separate preparation, or a combination of both)
  • Student will receive a tour of the dining center.  This tour will include food storage and production areas, service and self-access locations for specialized foods and equipment and will highlight areas of concern for the specific diet concern.
  • Introduce the student to other members of the dining center food production team.  This will ensure the student is familiar with whom to ask questions.
  • Answer any questions/concerns the student may have.

2) PRACTICE SAFE DINING PROCEDURES :

  • For students choosing to eat food from the regular line, best practices are to announce their dietary restriction to their server.  On request from the student, the dining staff will provide recipe information and ingredient / label information to the student. 
  • For students choosing to order their food separately, best practices are to complete a chefs dietary restriction card or chefs dietary preference card detailing their dietary restrictions for the kitchen staff.  This will be kept in the kitchen for the kitchen staff to refer to when the student calls. The student needs to call the kitchen at 508-565-1613 at least one hour prior to coming for their meal to allow adequate preparation time and verbally confirm their dietary restrictions when picking up their order.
  • Students should ALWAYS CARRY THEIR LIFE-SAVING MEDICATIONS.
3)  FOLLOW UP :  
  • Stonehill Dining Services registered dietitian will contact the student periodically throughout each semester to monitor the success of the dietary accommodations.  If the student has concerns or issues, the student, dining staff and the dietitian will work together to address the concerns and agree on a resolution.

  • Students who have pending appointments to discuss their dietary restrictions or who have not yet completed a Chefs Card, should ask to speak with the chef before ordering any food to ensure its safety. 

What can you do, in partnership with Stonehill Dining Services, to have a fulfilling dining experience?

  • Know your allergy.  Choose menu Items that you know are safe with your specific food restriction.  If in doubt, ask!  We are always happy to show you labels or recipes.  The Stonehill Dining Services Staff have many talents, but we can not read your mind!
  • Be your own advocate.
  • Do not be shy to create relationships with the Stonehill Dining Services Staff.  This will help make your dining experience less stressful.  We are here to help you and look forward to working with you. We believe that by working together we can help you develop your knowledge about the menu items that fit your food restriction.
  • Review the menu items served at the dining center before you arrive.
  • Please realize if you need to have a special menu item prepared, it will take extra time.  Please plan accordingly.

However, the ingredients and nutritional content of food items served in the campus dining locations may vary.  In addition, manufacturers may change their product formulation or consistency of ingredients without our knowledge, and product availability may fluctuate.  While we make every effort to identify ingredients, we cannot assure against these contingencies.  It is ultimately YOUR responsibility to determine whether to question ingredients or eat selected foods.  Stonehill Dining Services cannot guarantee the safety of students with life-threatening allergies.

My Zone

My ZoneMy Zone is our campus “pantry” located at _____________, where food items needed by students with Celiac disease or food allergies are stored and prepared with precautions against cross-contact. This special area is free of tree nut, peanut, and gluten-containing ingredients and products. My Zone gives students the ability to be involved in their own allergen-safe meal preparation. Simple Servings

Simple ServingsSimple Servings is our allergen-safe, dining option for our customers with food allergies, gluten intolerance, or those who prefer plain and simple foods. The Simple Servings station offers food free from common allergens: peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, wheat, soy, milk products, and eggs.  All foods offered are also free from gluten-containing ingredients. Simple Servings staff members are carefully trained to avoid cross-contact with food allergens. Separate equipment, storage areas, utensils and preparation areas minimize, but do not totally eliminate, the chances of gluten and allergens in our Simple Servings foods.
